What are the Major Styles in Designer Sunglasses?

Ample number of styles had come and gone in the field of designer sunglasses but only a handful were able to cement their position in the mind of the people. This blog will throw some light on the ten major styles of designer sunglasses - both past and present.

Designer sunglasses had always been one of the ‘must have’ items in any fashion-loving person’s cupboard. There was never a scarcity of styles for designer sunglasses however only the following ten were able to secure their place in history. Here comes the magnificent ten:

Aviator: Just utter ‘oversized teardrop-shaped lenses with thin golden metallic frame’ and a layman can also guess that the design is none other than Aviator by Ray Ban Sunglasses. From the very beginning in 1936 till now, the popularity of this style, which are often found in colored, wraparound and mirrored styles, had never dipped and is equally in demand by fashion buff men & women.

Wayfarer: Ray Ban had gifted the fashion world not one but two legendary designs. The first one is Aviator and Wayfarer is the other one. The trapezoidal lenses of this plastic-framed design are quite wide at the top compared to the bottom. Though it is available in several colors but the original color of this cult design, right from its launching year of 1952, is black.

Wraparound: A single, smooth, semi-circular lens, along with a minimal plastic frame and single piece of plastic serving as a nosepiece, cover both the eyes and a large area around it. People who are into extreme sports swear by these sunglasses.

Gradient: These are of darker shade at the top of the lens but gradually go lighter towards the bottom. This way it provides more protection from sunlight the higher one look through the lens but the lower one look through the lens, the protection lowers along with it also. It comes handy in nightclubs and for pilots & automobile drivers.

Clip-on: These sunglasses are tinted. It can be easily clipped on to eyeglasses to protect the eyes from the sunlight. Flip-up glasses are an alternative to it.

Flip-up: Flip-up sunglasses come handy as it can be used as corrective eyeglasses. The user can flip up the tinted lenses when & where needed (mainly while indoor). You can easily make out that flip-up is an alternative to these sunglasses.

Mirrored: The reason behind this particular name is a metallic, partially reflective coating on the outer surface of the tinted glass. It works as an alternative to polarization for protection from UVA and UVB rays resulting into improved contrast when depth perception is of high importance (e.g. seeing ice while skiing).

Oversized: These type of sunglasses come in bright colors with colored lenses and often used for humorous purposes. It provides relatively more protection from sunburn as it covers larger area of the face and is immensely popular among women. Celebrities often take help of it to hide from paparazzi.

Shutter: It was a fad in the ‘80s. The horizontal shutters decrease the amount of sun light, which falls on the users eyes. However, it is very poor in providing protection from deadly UV rays.

Tea shade: These psychedelic art wire-rim sunglasses were made a craze by rock stars in the ‘60s but it is completely out of fashion now.

Therefore, if you are planning to buy sunglasses, whether it is men's sunglasses or women's sunglasses, you know which styles are classic and will remain in vogue forever.
